Description:
Students travel to Salvador, the capital of Afro-Brazilian culture in the coastal state of Bahia. They intensively study rhythm ensemble pieces with members of three prominent "Grupos Culturales," each actively engaged in education and social/political rights for "negras" (the term Salvadorans have chosen for all shades of "black" people): Ile Aye (a long established group in the Liberdade--"freedom"-- section of Salvador); Banda Dida (an all-women percussion group in Pehlourino that has performed throughout the world); and Banguçaço (an up-and-coming group comprised of over 100 children age 6-18 in Alagados, one of the poorest sections of the city.) Students also participate in three workshops focused on Afro-Brazilian dance with Prof. Antonio Cozido, and take nightly copoeira classes at Ginga Mundo with Maestro Sabia. Finally, students are introduced to Candomble by Professor Willis at Casa Branca, the oldest of Salvador's 2000 Candomble temples. Certain brave souls attend a late-night Candomble ceremony.
